On the Giglio island, in the Tuscan Archipelago, a desalination plant has been started up to guarantee the supply of fresh water to the island, that so far was transported by tankers. The sea water is taken through a water intake system consisting of a cupro-nickel alloy screen (CuNi 90/10) that prevents the algae formation. The screen has been made and supplied by JOHNSON SCREENS; it has the triple function of: ensuring maximum flow rate, preventing the entry of solid debris and protecting the fishes. The new desalination plant has a production capacity of 3 thousand cubic meter of fresh water per day, it shall grant to the Tuscany Region, who has covered the cost of the tankers so far, to spare approximately 5 million euro per year.
